Istanbul in April (weather & tulips)

April is a spring month in Istanbul and often one of the most pleasant times to visit. Days are typically mild and comfortable, while evenings can be cool.
Light rain is possible, so we recommend packing a light jacket and a small umbrella.

Tulip season: April is also associated with Istanbul’s famous spring tulips.
Parks and historic areas can be especially colorful—consider visiting Emirgan Park (Sarıyer), Gülhane Park, or nearby gardens if you have free time.

Travel to Istanbul (Airports & arrival)

Istanbul is a major global travel hub with two international airports. Please choose your airport based on your flight availability and intended travel route
within the city.

Airports
Istanbul Airport (IST) — European side
The city’s primary airport, serving extensive international routes.
Options to reach the city include taxis, metro connections, and airport shuttle buses (e.g., HAVAİST).

Sabiha Gökçen Airport (SAW) — Asian side
Important hub for regional and many low-cost flights. Reaching the European side (and the venue) can take longer due to distance and traffic.
A common option is HAVABUS to Taksim, then metro/bus/taxi onward.

Traffic note: Istanbul traffic can be heavy, especially during morning and evening rush hours. Please budget buffer time for airport and campus transfers.

Getting around Istanbul

Istanbul has an extensive public transportation network (metro, tram, bus, ferry) as well as plentiful taxis. Public transport is often the best way to avoid road traffic.

Istanbulkart (public transport card)

We strongly recommend purchasing an Istanbulkart for convenient travel on metro, tram, municipal buses, ferries, and funiculars.
Cards are available at major transit stations and vending machines. (Note: airport shuttles and taxis generally have separate payment systems.)

Istanbulkart official website

  • Metro & tram: Fast, reliable, and often the easiest way to cross busy areas. The M2 metro line is especially useful for reaching Hacıosman (closest metro stop to Koç University).
  • Buses: A dense network can reach areas beyond the metro. Travel time can vary with traffic.
  • Ferries: A scenic and practical way to travel between the European and Asian sides—also a “must-do” Istanbul experience.
  • Taxis & ride-hailing: Widely available. Ensure the meter is used; allow extra time in traffic. Ride-hailing apps can help with destination entry.
  • Dolmuş (minibuses): Shared minibuses on fixed routes, paid in cash. Useful for local routes (e.g., Sarıyer area), though less intuitive for first-time visitors.
  • Walking: Very enjoyable in the historic center and waterfront areas—be prepared for hills in some neighborhoods.

Getting to Koç University (Rumelifeneri Campus)

Koç University’s main campus is in northern Istanbul (Sarıyer). The most common route is M2 metro to Hacıosman (final stop), then taxi or bus 154 to campus.

From central Istanbul (e.g., Taksim / Levent / Şişli)
  1. Take M2 metro (Yenikapı–Hacıosman) to Hacıosman.
  2. From Hacıosman, choose one of the following:
    • Taxi: Typically the fastest and most convenient option, especially when shared with colleagues. Travel time depends on traffic.
    • Public bus: IETT 154 “Hacıosman Metro – Koç Üniversitesi” (the primary bus that enters the campus).

      IETT route details & timetable
From Istanbul Airport (IST)
  • Taxi / transfer: Most direct (travel time depends on traffic).
  • HAVAİST shuttle: Useful to reach central hubs or metro connections (check routes/schedules online).
  • Metro connections: IST has rail connectivity; you can transfer into the broader metro network, then continue toward M2/Hacıosman.
From Sabiha Gökçen Airport (SAW)
  • Taxi / transfer: Direct, but often longer due to crossing to the European side.
  • HAVABUS to Taksim: Then continue via M2 metro to Hacıosman, and taxi/bus 154 to campus.
Other local options
  • Dolmuş (Sarıyer <–> campus): Shared minibuses may operate locally between Sarıyer and the campus area (cash payment). Useful if you are staying around Sarıyer/Tarabya.
  • Driving / parking: On-campus parking is available for visitors (policies may apply). Driving in Istanbul can be challenging for first-time visitors due to traffic.
  • Campus shuttles: Koç University operates shuttles for students/staff. If any workshop-specific shuttle guidance is provided, it will be announced closer to the event (not guaranteed at this time).

Accommodation

We recommend three areas depending on your preference for convenience vs. city life.
Istanbul is a large city, and Koç University is located in northern Sarıyer—choosing the right neighborhood can significantly improve your daily commute.
If possible, consider staying either near Sarıyer/Tarabya (closest) or along the M2 metro line (Maslak/Levent) for easy access to Hacıosman.

A. The Bosphorus Line (Sarıyer & Tarabya)

Best for: Stunning sea views, resort feel, and close proximity (15–20 min taxi).

B. Business District (Maslak / Levent)

Best for: Direct metro access to city center and easy transport to venue.

C. City Center (Taksim / Beyoğlu)

Best for: City energy, dining, culture, and history. Commute is typically ~60+ mins (traffic dependent).

Booking tip: April is a popular travel period. We recommend booking accommodation early, especially if you prefer Bosphorus-side hotels (Sarıyer/Tarabya).
